Free Sole Trader Invoice Template — New Zealand GST

A simple, professional invoice template designed for New Zealand sole traders, self-employed individuals, and one-person businesses. Whether you're a tradesperson, consultant, artist, or service provider operating as a sole trader, this template gives you a compliant GST tax invoice in minutes.

Do Sole Traders Need to Charge GST?

In New Zealand, sole traders must register for GST if their annual turnover exceeds $60,000 (or is expected to). Once registered, you must charge 15% GST on all taxable supplies and file GST returns (monthly, two-monthly, or six-monthly). You can voluntarily register even below $60,000 to claim back GST on business expenses.

What Makes a Valid Tax Invoice?

Under NZ tax law, a valid GST tax invoice must include your name, GST number, invoice date, description of goods/services, and the GST amount. For invoices over $1,000, you also need the buyer's name and address. This template includes all required fields.

Sole Trader vs Company

As a sole trader, you and your business are the same legal entity. Your invoices should use your personal name (or trading name). You use your personal IRD number for tax purposes, and your GST number is linked to your IRD number. This template includes both IRD and GST number fields.
